I have been following an anti-vaccine conversation on Facebook and am deeply concerned about the consequences that the children of these anti-vaccine parents may face. I know their parents are well intentioned, but they are very poorly informed.

One of the consistent themes of this particular discussion is the profitability of vaccines for immunizing physicians. As you know, giving vaccines is done for the benefit of patients, not for the profit of the practice. In fact, in 2011, we worked with athenahealth to look at actual vaccine claims and payments then compared those to the acquisition costs for the vaccines to determine the profit or loss being experienced by athenahealth’s clients.

Here is the bottom line of what the study found:

If the estimated minimum indirect cost (as reported by The American Academy of Pediatrics) is factored into the full cost of the vaccination, then the rate of underpayment is 47.2%.

As proven by the facts, no one gives vaccines because of a huge profit motive.
