INDEPENDENT PRACTICE RESURGENCE

Fall is our season for attending the national conferences of the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). We’re often the only buying group that attends, but we exhibit because our participation helps us reduce the cost of the conference for physicians.

The first conference this year was the AAFP, and it was disappointing. We saw a few physicians who have decided to join our program, but the majority of the folks attending seemed to be employed by health systems. Sadly, that group of physicians seems to feel that accepting employment has deprived them of any decision-making authority. Physicians are intended to be in charge of their practice and the care they provide. When they feel that they have lost that control, it makes for a very morose environment.

Next came the AAP conference and what a breath of fresh air it was. We were busy throughout the conference talking with physician practice owners who recognize what our program can do for their bottom line. These owner physicians understand the personal financial benefit that our savings provide. They don’t have to check with a purchasing department, or a committee to join us. On these ships, the captain is in charge and moving forward. Currently, we are actually working with several physicians who are starting new practices and seeing their excitement is infectious.

We are leaving this weekend for the MGMA conference and are eager to see if the upbeat atmosphere of the AAP continues.

For those of us who lived through the mass employment of physicians in the early 1990s and the subsequent re-privatization of practices as hospitals cut their losses on acquired practices, this has a very familiar feel. Fortunately, this time we are ready and have everything anyone might need to move back into their own practice.

As we have said before, employment is the absolute best model for some physicians. But for others, it doesn’t work well. Our goal is to help you have the best possible practice in whichever environment you choose.
